MONEY, LIES, and GOD: INSIDE the MOVEMENT to DESTROY AMERICAN DEMOCRACY (audiobook) by Katherine Stewart

Published in 2025 by Bloomsbury Publishing.
Read by Patricia Rodriguez.
Duration: 11 hours, 36 minutes.
Unabridged.

In Money, Lies, and GodKatherine Stewart takes a hard look at the intertwined worlds of MAGA, Christian Nationalists, big money backers (old money and new tech money), the Claremont Institute, White Replacement Theory folks, militias, and groups like Moms for Liberty.

It looks like a lot to connect but, in reality, it's not too hard. Think of your stereotypical Christian Nationalist mega-church. They're going to be MAGA voters. They are exposed to materials produced by think tanks like the Claremont Institute or Focus on the Family that are financially supported by big money backers. Moms for Liberty will already be there, hyping up the dangers of public schools and certain reading materials. Some megachurches host faith and freedom conferences that are strong on the politics and feature a bit of Christianity.

The author, Katherine Stewart
I was distressed by the sheer quantity of Christian Nationalists out there. I am a lifelong Christian and this movement scares me. It is pseudo-Christian at best and it tarnishes the Christian faith.

What is a Christian Nationalist? It's not simply a patriotic Christian. It's a belief that it is not possible to be a good American unless you are a Christian. The federal government should declare the United States a Christian Nation and the federal government should actively advocate explicitly Christian values. Under all of this is the belief that the success of the United States is part of God’s plan (as though the USA is literally mentioned in the Bible).

Throw in a media and social media environment that reinforce the whole thing and you've got the recipe that makes your uncle sound like a crazy person at the Thanksgiving table. The key is, in his world he doesn't sound crazy - you do.

This is a powerful book. She weaves it all together wonderfully.

This was also a depressing book for me. My faith is being subverted by Christian Nationalism. My fellow Americans believe nonsense like children are relieving themselves in giant kitty litter boxes and they vote for people that agree with them.

Sigh.

WELCOMING the STRANGER: JUSTICE, COMPASSION, and TRUTH in the IMMIGRATION DEBATE by Matthew Soerens and Jenny Yang

Published in 2018 by IVP.

A few years ago I was determined to learn a lot about immigration in the United States. I bought Welcoming the Stranger during that time, but I put it aside because the other books I had read were, to put it simply, not good.

So, this book went into the dreaded to-be-read pile, and it might have stayed there forever except for the reelection of President Trump. His actions to fight immigration of just about any sort prompted me to pick up this book and learn a little more about the immigration system.

Even though this book was written in 2018, just 7 years ago, some parts of it felt hopelessly out of date thanks to Trump's relentless push against so many norms, rules, and laws in 2025 when it comes to immigration.

The basics are there, however, so the book does have value as a primer on immigration. But, the book is more than that - it is a Christian look at this issue because the authors work for World Relief, a Christian organization that works with refugees around the world and helps immigrants seeking asylum in the United States. Their budget was decimated when the DOGE cuts came after USAID funding in January of 2025.

Even though this book was written long before that, its look at what the Bible teaches about how to deal with foreign people living among God's people. The book is actually designed to be used as a small group Bible study - there are discussion questions included in the back.

I rate this book 4 stars out of 5. It can be found on Amazon.com here: Welcoming the Stranger: Justice, Compassion, and Truth in the Immigration Debate.

GHOSTED: AN AMERICAN STORY (audiobook) by Nancy French

Published by Zondervan in April of 2024.

Read by the author, Nancy French.

Duration: 9 hours, 56 minutes.

Unabridged.

My synopsis:

Ghosted is an autobiography of Nancy French. Nancy French had a career as a Conservative political columnist and ghost-writing for people in Conservative circles. She helped Conservative politicians write opinion pieces, helped them come up with clever lines for radio and TV interviews, and even books. She worked with such Conservative stars as Sarah Palin and Ben Sasse. She even worked with the Romney campaign.

The book starts with her childhood in Kentucky, including an awful story of sexual abuse at the hands of a manipulative youth pastor and how that sent her life into a spiral into she met her future husband while she was in college.

Nancy French is married to David French, a well-known Conservative political columnist, commentator, and attorney. He worked for two organizations that defended the rights of Christian groups and Conservatives on college campuses and Christian businesses that did not want to support the birth control provisions of the Affordable Care Act.

This couple epitomized the pre-Trump Christian Conservative movement.

When Trump became the Republican nominee in 2016, they were mortified. He was the opposite of every moral position they stood for in so many ways. They refused to back Trump and their friends refused to support them. Nancy's work dried up and people from their local church began shunning them. They were ghosted by their friends and colleagues.

My review:

This book is an up and down affair. The beginning and the end are very strong, the middle is a bit slow until the Donald Trump campaign throws their lives into disarray. On the whole, I rate Ghosted 4 stars out of 5.

KINGDOM of RAGE: THE RISE of CHRISTIAN EXTREMISM and the PATH BACK to PEACE (audiobook) by Elizabeth Neumann

Published by Worthy Books in 2024.
Read by Erin Bennett.
Duration: 8 hours, 38 minutes.
Unabridged.

Elizabeth Neumann worked for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the George W. Bush and Trump administrations.

During the Bush Administration, the work of the DHS centered around preventing attempts by foreign groups, usually Muslim-based, to commit acts of terrorism on the United States or on Americans abroad. She became an expert on why some Muslims were radicalizing (or self-radicalizing), the signs of what to look for, and things that can be done to prevent radicalization.

During the Trump Administration, she started seeing more and more reports about domestic terrorism, usually coming from self-radicalized ultra-conservatives who are encouraged by media. Two prime examples are the Pittsburgh synagogue shooter and the El Paso shooter. Both issued manifestos that quoted liberally from fringe MAGA Conservative theories, like the  Great Replacement theory pushed by politicians like Donald Trump and media figures like Tucker Carlson. Carlson mentioned the theory more than 400 times on his show.

At first, Neumann thought this was a ridiculous notion. But, as she noticed changes in rhetoric at her own church and with old friends from a former church that she reconnected with, she decided to take a serious look.

What she saw were the exact same trends in some parts of the American Christian community that she had found in the radicalized Muslim community 10-12 years earlier and it mortified her. This was not the faith she knew. She recognized that thought as well - she had heard it so many times when Muslim terrorists were her main worry during the Bush Administration.

Neumann does a thorough job of explaining the process of radicalization and the dangers of flirting with radicalizing comments for political gain. She also demonstrates that "self-radicalization" is much easier with the rise of social media. People prone to radicalization can easily find an online community. They can also watch videos and read texts without interacting with another human being. While this section is thorough, it is often dry and clinical as well. It felt more like a textbook reading or a briefing rather than an engaging text.

Her recommendations section have a similar feel, making the book as a whole highly informative but not particularly engaging.

I rate this audiobook 3 stars out of 5. It can be found on Amazon.com here: KINGDOM of RAGE: THE RISE of CHRISTIAN EXTREMISM and the PATH BACK to PEACE.

WHITE RURAL RAGE: THE THREAT to AMERICAN DEMOCRACY (audiobook) by Tom Schaller and Paul Waldman

Published in 2024 by Random House Audio.
Read by Ray Porter.
Duration: 11 hours, 2 minutes.
Unabridged.

White Rural Rage is a look at the rural/urban divide in the United States in politics as personified in the MAGA movement.

The book is broken up into multiple chapters, each with a theme about how rural America is advantaged even though they claim they are put upon by urban elites. Sometimes, the authors have a point, sometimes they are just grinding their axes for no particular reason (like in the pickup truck chapter.)

The book has some excellent points, but it clearly written like an extended opinion hit piece rather than an extended informational piece and that did nothing but hurt the audiobook in my opinion.

I rate this audiobook 3 stars out of 5. It can be found on Amazon.com here: WHITE RURAL RAGE: THE THREAT to AMERICAN DEMOCRACY by Tom Schaller and Paul Waldman.

FINISH WHAT WE STARTED: THE MAGA MOVEMENT'S GROUND WAR to END DEMOCRACY (audiobook) by Isaac Arnsdorf

Published in April of 2024 by Little, Brown, and Company.
Read by Will Damron.
Duration: 8 hours, 52 minutes.
Unabridged.

Finish What We Started is a look at the MAGA/Trump movement from a different perspective. There are lots of books about Trump, his children, Roger Stone, Stephen Miller, Bill Barr, Mike Pence, or any of the other big players in the Trump Administration.

This book is different. It looks at regular people caught up in the movement in official positions and how they reacted. There is a guy who wrote a kindle e-book about the real power of political parties - the local precinct committee person in numbers. The theory is that if you get enough like-minded people in charge of the local precincts, you will control the party.

That author gets the attention of Steve Bannon and his popular podcast and people start buying the book and putting its principles in action. Bannon is the only famous person featured in the book.

The book chronicles the transition from traditional Republicans to MAGA Republicans and the changes that means for basic retail politics (for example, motivating people to actually go to the polls to vote) and what it means for people who have been working for the Republican party for 20, 30, even 40 years. Some of the stories were compelling.

I rate this audiobook 4 stars out of 5. It can found on Amazon.com here: FINISH WHAT WE STARTED: THE MAGA MOVEMENT'S GROUND WAR to END DEMOCRACY by Isaac Arnsdorf.

TIRED of WINNING: DONALD TRUMP and the END of the GRAND OLD PARTY (audiobook) by Jonathan Karl

Published in November of 2023 by Penguin Audio.
Read by the author, Jonathan Karl.
Duration: 8 hours, 32 minutes.
Unabridged.

ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl brings us his third book about Donald Trump as President and as former President.

His first book covered candidate Trump and the first 3 years of the Trump Administration. The second book covered the last year of the Trump Administration with a special focus on all of the "stop the steal" claims. It was called Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show. Too bad it was not in fact Trump's "final act."

Karl has a long relationship with the former President. He interviewed 5 times before he even decided to officially run for President in the 2016 election. He's interviewed him multiple times since, including for all three of his books. Karl includes actual audio clips from those interviews (questions and answers) for the benefit of those that doubt.

If you think Donald Trump is awesome, this is not the book for you. I'm not going to go into the details because, at this point - after so many years of Trump's shenanigans, those details won't change any minds.

I thought this was an engrossing listen because I am very, very skeptical of anything that the 45th President is involved in.

I rate this book 5 stars out of 5. It can be found on Amazon.com here:  TIRED of WINNING: DONALD TRUMP and the END of the GRAND OLD PARTY by Jonathan Karl.

NETWORK of LIES: THE EPIC SAGA of FOX NEWS, DONALD TRUMP, and the BATLLE for AMERICAN DEMOCRACY (audiobook) by Brian Stelter

Brian Stelter is a former CNN commentator. While in college, he started a blog about news commentary shows and the personalities that make them what they are. In a way, he has been working on this book for more than 15 years.

Stelter pored over the paperwork from the Dominion Voting Systems lawsuit against Fox News to help write this 2020-2023 history of the cable news giant.

He spends the most amount of time looking at the biggest show with the biggest host on Fox News at the time - Tucker Carlson. He goes over a litany of Tucker's Greatest Hits - the Great Replacement Theory, The January 6 Insurrection was just a tourist event, Ukrainian biolabs, transgender conspiracies, and, of course, the Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen.

He looks at the power dynamics at the top of Fox News, including Rupert Murdoch, the board at Fox News, the advertisers, Murdoch's kids and the various women that Murdoch has been married or engaged to.

Of course, the most powerful players were not actually present in the room. The most powerful players were (and still are) the viewers. Stelter demonstrates that the viewers were given a steady diet of misinformation and outright lies and, after a few years of this, refused anything but misinformation.

When Fox News tried to back off from the bombastic, crazytown commentary that passed for news after the January 6th Insurrection, viewers fled in droves. Where did they go? They went to the two networks that were even more bombastic and even more crazytown - OAN and NewsMax. Fox News could literally see the data that showed that they lost viewers and OAN and NewsMax gained a big chunk of them.

An actual screen shot from Carlson's
February 1, 2023 broadcast.
Anyone can see they had committed
themselves to serious journalism.
This caused a reversal of policy and a resumption of the crazytown news. There were open discussions via email and text that showed that everyone knew that the "Stop the Steal" claims were bogus, but they were also hyper-aware that the viewers refused to hear anything of it - they left Fox News to go to the people that told them their comforting stories, whether they were true or not. So, Fox News decided to keep feeding them the equivalent of news garbage in order to keep them watching.

And that led to the lawsuits, the firing of Tucker Carlson, and even more lying to the viewers of Fox News (almost as if losing 3/4 of a billion dollars in a lawsuit is not a good bit of feedback that tells them that they are doing news all wrong.)

Stelter tells a story that would be unbelievable if I hadn't lived through it all and seen the rough outlines of it for myself.

I rate this audiobook 4 stars out of 5. It can be found on Amazon.com here: NETWORK of LIES: THE EPIC SAGA of FOX NEWS, DONALD TRUMP, and the BATLLE for AMERICAN DEMOCRACY by Brian Stelter.

OATH and HONOR: A MEMOIR and a WARNING (audiobook) by Liz Cheney

Published in 2023 by Little, Brown and Company in December of 2023.

Read by the author, Liz Cheney.
Duration: 12 hours, 14 minutes.
Unabridged.

Liz Cheney is most famous for two things. Pre-January 6, 2021 she was famous for being Dick Cheney's daughter and a leader of the House Republicans.

Post-January 6, 2021 Cheney is most famous for being one of the leaders of the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack. Cheney was one of the few Republicans willing to incur the wrath of Donald Trump and actually look into the role he played in the January 6 Attack.

Cheney calls the book a memoir, but this is not really true. The book offers next to nothing about her childhood or her personal life. You know that she has a husband because she mentions that he helped her proofread various papers she had prepared for the committee.

Cheney starts with former President Donald Trump's election denialism immediately following the 2020 election date rather than her own life. This is a very Liz Cheney thing to do - the purpose of the book is to talk about how Donald Trump's Election Denialism and how it led directly to the January 6 Attack. There is not much else to the book because, in her mind, this movement is a direct threat to the American Republic itself.

I am not going to detail all of her arguments that she laid out in the televised presentations that the committee prepared for the country in 2022. Those are easily available on YouTube and anyone can watch and see the arguments she makes in this book.

The book is almost always clear, concise, and to the point. That is very much Cheney's plainspoken style.

I rate this audiobook 5 stars out of 5. It can be found on Amazon.com here: OATH and HONOR: A MEMOIR and a WARNING (audiobook) by Liz Cheney.

AMERICAN REBOOT: AN IDEALIST'S GUIDE TO GETTING BIG THINGS DONE (audiobook) by Will Hurd

Published in March of 2022 by Simon and Schuster Audio.
Read by the author, Will Hurd.
Duration: 8 hours, 47 minutes.
Unabridged.

Will Hurd has done a lot of things in his 45 years. He has been an operations analyst for the CIA (working in Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan), he was worked in high-tech (including cyber-security and artificial intelligence), has served 6 years as a member of the House of Representatives from Texas, and is now a Republican candidate for President in 2024.

This book was undoubtedly an attempt to introduce Will Hurd to a larger audience. I follow politics pretty well and I had never heard of Will Hurd until he announced his campaign for President in June of 2023 (to be fair, there are 535 members of Congress and most are not well known outside of their districts.) I heard about this book in a political podcast and, lo and behold, it turns out that my library had it.

Just to let you know where I am coming from as I review this book, I am a Never Trump Republican and have been since 2015. I am anti-MAGA. Hurd got my attention because he says a lot of the same things.

That being said, his audiobook was a mixed bag for me. It has real moments of clarity and inspiration but it also has sections that are kind of boring (discussions of old political fights and debates, for example.) I am going to end up giving the book 3 stars our of 5 because it was not a bad listen, but also not an amazing listen.

What it all comes down to is this - while this is not the most exciting book, listening to him speak about a wide variety of topics for almost 9 hours did help me decide to look into Will Hurd more seriously (
The author. I freely admit that I
stole this picture from
 his campaign website.
here is his campaign website
) and at this time he is my choice in the GOP primary. What does that mean? Probably nothing - I was a Ted Cruz man in 2015 and I've been nothing but disappointed in him since 2016. But, it's good to know that I have an option in the Republican Party after feeling 100% left out since the summer of 2016.

The book demonstrated that you can have Conservative principles and not be MAGA in today's GOP. You can argue and not be unpleasant and demeaning. You can argue and learn new things and change your mind. You can have friends in the other party because they're not evil - they just see the world differently than you. Also, you don't have to participate in the culture wars to win.

THE CORRUPTION of LINDSEY GRAHAM: A CASE STUDY in the RISE of AUTHORITARIANISM (kindle) by William Saletan

Winner of a 2024 Webby Award

The author of this short book (129 pages) makes it clear that he has no particular grudge against South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham. Lindsey Graham serves as a stand-in for the Republican Party in general. He is a particularly good stand-in because he was there from the very beginning of the Donald Trump phenomenon because he was one of the many candidates for the 2016 Republican nomination.

President Donald J. Trump and
Senator Lindsey Graham
Graham is also an amazingly frequent guest on the Sunday morning political talk shows, the evening shows on Fox, local TV, and talk radio. Graham loves to talk into microphones and because of that it is very easy to track his gradual moves from being a loudly outspoken opponent of Trump to the most vociferous defender of and apologist for the former president.

Saletan thoroughly documents this transition and backs up each of these subtle changes with hundreds of actual links to videos, transcripts, and news articles. The reader can check for him/herself. I checked a ton of the links because there were so many ridiculous things that the 45th President has done and said that I simply forgotten about some of them.

This explains the idea behind
the book quite well.
This book is unlikely to change the minds of a MAGA friend of relative so don't even bother. But, if you are wondering how someone like Lindsey Graham could go from saying that Donald Trump was "hateful," a "demagogue," a "kook" and a "race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot" (page 8) to being his most prominent apologist, this book documents every baby step that Graham and the Republicans took to get there.

I rate this e-book 5 stars out of 5. It can be found on Amazon.com here: THE CORRUPTION of LINDSEY GRAHAM: A CASE STUDY in the RISE of AUTHORITARIANISM by William Saletan.

THEY WANT to KILL AMERICANS: THE MILITIAS, TERRORISTS, and DERANGED IDEOLOGY of the TRUMP INSURGENCY (audiobook) by Malcolm Nance

Read by Ari Fliakos.
Duration: 10 hours, 30 minutes.
Unabridged.

Malcolm Nance served for 20 years in the U.S. Navy in cryptology. His work led him to work in intelligence and counter-terrorism. Since his retirement from the military he has worked an additional 20 years as a consultant to the military, as a college lecturer on the topic of counter-terrorism, and as the head of a think tank.

Nance applied what he knows about terrorism to the January 6 Riot and comes up with a series of disturbing conclusions.

Nance is concerned that the most extreme elements of the MAGA movement have gone beyond rhetoric and casual flirtation with militia movements and have actively engaged with them. This book was published in July of 2022 but yesterday (November 29, 2022) two leaders of the Oath Keepers militia were found guilty of seditious conspiracy for their actions at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Why was a fringe militia group in Washington, D.C. on that date? In the trial it was established that one of the reasons they were there was to provide security for speakers and VIPs at the Trump rally that immediately preceded the attack on the Capitol.

Nance's point would be that it should be a major point of concern when politicians move from official security to armed thugs who are not answerable to official authority. They become a private army.

Roger Stone in a golf cart with his Oathkeeper security forces.
Click on the picture to get a larger image and read the shoulder
patch of the man at the wheel of the cart. Do you want your
President's advisors to hang out with violent, organized gangs?
What does that mean for our political future?
Roger Stone has been a Republican campaign strategist since the days of Richard Nixon. He is an infamous dirty trickster. He was an advisor to former President Trump - close enough that he received an official Presidential pardon from Trump when Stone was convicted of lying to Congress. Roger Stone met with the Oathkeepers and the Proud Boys multiple times before the election. It is well-documented because Stone was participating in a documentary. He was quite open about using violence to overturn the results of the election and he was clearly hanging out taking selfies and posing for photos with two violent militia groups in the days before January 6.

This book provides a handy guide to the militia movement in the United States. He provides recent histories, ideologies, relative strengths, and connections to the GOP establishment. Some of them are shockingly well connected.  It is sobering and more than a little depressing to see how low the GOP has sunk. Can you imagine Ronald Reagan even acknowledging the existence of a group like the Proud Boys, let alone letting them speak with his advisors and telling them to, "Stand back and stand by" in a national televised debate. The Proud Boys were encouraged, not dissuaded

Some might argue that groups like the Proud Boys are really a response to Antifa. It is not an unreasonable argument. Antifa is a real thing and they can be violent street brawlers. The difference is that Antifa is not serving as bodyguards for Democrat politicians. They are not serving as Joe Biden's off-the-books muscle.

This book is unlikely to change the mind of your hard-core MAGA uncle, but it does offer a sobering analysis of the situation the American republic finds itself in. It is good to have a long and hard look at this side of our political situation. This is a depressing and important work.

I rate this audiobook 5 stars out of 5. It can be found on Amazon.com here: THEY WANT to KILL AMERICANS: THE MILITIAS, TERRORISTS, and DERANGED IDEOLOGY of the TRUMP INSURGENCY (audiobook) by Malcolm Nance.

THANK YOUR for YOUR SERVITUDE: DONALD TRUMP'S WASHINGTON and the PRICE of SUBMISSION (audiobook) by Mark Leibovich

Published in 2022 by Penguin Audio.
Read by Joe Barrett.
Duration: 8 hours, 57 minutes.
Unabridged.

Mark Leibovich is an experienced political reporter. For years, he covered Washington, D.C. and various presidential campaigns while working for New York Times Magazine. He also writes with a sarcastic, funny edge.

As made clear by the title, Thank You for Your Servitude does not look positively on former President Donald Trump.  Also, as made clear by the title, this book looks at the name brand people that worked for and with the Trump Administration and the ways that they debased themselves for a seat at the table. There are also a few people that stood up the former President and paid a political price.

Former President Donald Trump and South
Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham.
These well-known people include Mitch McConnell (he both stood up to the President and debased himself), Mitt Romney, John McCain, Sean Spicer, Paul Ryan, Chris Christie, Reince Preibus and the incomparable Lindsey Graham. Leibovich calls Graham "Gilligan to Donald Trump's Skipper". Personally, I have always said that Graham doesn't actually have a spine - he borrows his spine from his friends. When McCain was alive, Graham stood up to Trump. When McCain passed away, Graham became Trump's "Gilligan" and went back on everything he stood for before (if he actually really stood for anything on his own)

This book is similar to another book I reviewed 2 months ago, Why We Did It by Tim Miller. Miller talks about some of the big names, but spends more time discussing the connected but unknown people that fill out a campaign and an administration. The two books compliment each other very well.

This audiobook was read brilliantly by Joe Barrett. He carried the tone perfectly and helped make this an audiobook that I quickly marathoned.

I rate this audibook 5 stars out of 5. It can be found on Amazon.com here: THANK YOUR for YOUR SERVITUDE: DONALD TRUMP'S WASHINGTON and the PRICE of SUBMISSION (audiobook) by Mark Leibovich.

WHY WE DID IT: A TRAVELOGUE from the REPUBLICAN ROAD to HELL (audiobook) by Tim Miller

Unabridged.

Tim Miller is a Republican political operative. He previously worked on the presidential campaigns for John McCain (2008), Jon Huntsman (2012) and Jeb Bush (2016), worked for the Republican party as a liaison to the Romney campaign (2012), created "gotcha" content for websites and traditional media, helped run a Political Action Committee (PAC) and writes regularly for Rolling Stone magazine and political websites.

He's connected. He knows someone on every campaign. He knew people all over the Trump administration.

He is also a "Never Trumper". He once made a list compiled by the Washington Post of the top ten Never Trumpers.

Miller talks about the motivations of people that joined the Trump White House after they swore that they never would because he was simply not an acceptable candidate or president. He talked with several people and he got the same answers over and over. Among them are these:

1. Fear of Missing Out. The White House is where the action is, no matter who is the President.

2. Fear of damaging their careers. Refusing to work for President Trump could spell the end of their career as Republicans.

3. Looking to further their careers. Enthusiastically supporting the GOP candidate and the GOP President could vault their career ahead.

4. Being the adult in the room. Someone had to keep an eye on Trump and say no to the bad ideas and suggest better ones. A lot of people said this but there were very few times when someone could tell him that they actually did it.

There were other categories as well, but perhaps you get the idea.

Miller makes an excellent analogy comparing his own life with his colleagues that went to work for President Trump and his own experiences working for multiple Republican candidates as a gay man. He notes that he simply ignored the clear biases that some of the candidates he supported had against people like him. Instead, he focused on the positives because...(insert one of the reasons from up above).

Miller's analysis was most likely accurate. However, I wasn't a big fan of Miller's snarky nicknames for people. He was especially rough with Sean Spicer. I am not a fan of Spicer, but I see no reason to call him by an embarrassing nickname that he was given in college over and over and over again. It was unnecessary.

I rate this audiobook 4 stars out of 5. It can be found on Amazon.com here: WHY WE DID IT:  A TRAVELOGUE from the REPUBLICAN ROAD to HELL (audiobook) by Tim Miller.

HAS ANYONE SEEN the PRESIDENT? (audiobook) by Michael Lewis

Published by Simon and Schuster Audio in 2018.
Only available in audiobook format.
Read by the author, Michael Lewis.
Duration: 0 hours, 54 minutes.
Unabridged.

Originally, Has Anyone Seen the President was originally written for Bloomberg View, the editorial/opinion site of Bloomberg News. Lewis went to Washington. D.C. during the run up to President Trump's "State of the Union Address". Lewis visits the press room in the White House, speaks with a former press secretary from the Obama Administration and visits with Trump advisor Steve Bannon. He also spends time with a former ethics official in the government who quit because President Trump and his administration openly flout the standards for ethics that were established in previous administrations (like divesting your portfolio of investments that could be a conflict of interest with your position in government). Finally, Lewis ends up watching the State of the Union with Steve Bannon in Bannon's home with running commentary from Bannon.

Michael Lewis, for me, is best known as the author of the books that inspired the movies Moneyball and The Blind Slide.  Turns out that he also writes a lot about finance and politics. Who knew? Well, a whole lot of people did, so I guess I was just out to lunch on Michael Lewis and his many facets.

Steve Bannon
The biggest coup of the entire book is the access to Steve Bannon. Bannon is widely regarded as the man who masterminded Trump's 2016 election win. There used to be people that would say that the secret to Ronald Reagan's success was to just "let Reagan be Reagan" because his folksy charm would work wonders. Bannon was the one advisor that would push to "let Trump be Trump." He recognized that Trump's abrasive style and quirky speaking style repelled people by the millions but it also attracted just as many diehard supporters and that was the secret to victory.

If you are part of the group that is repelled by former President Trump, this book will only confirm that repulsion. Bannon's hired gun style is obvious, but he does nothing to betray former President Trump. If you are a fan of the former president, this book will not shake you from those convictions. It is all old news, albeit old news packaged in an interesting story told by a talented story teller.

THE UNDOCUMENTED AMERICANS (audiobook) by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio

Published in 2020 by Random House Audio.
Read by the author, Karla Cornejo Villavicencio.
Duration: 4 hours, 53 minutes.
Unabridged.

Villavicencio is a "Dreamer", also known as a DACA kid. DACA is the program started by President Obama to deal with immigrants who came to the United States illegally as children. Generally speaking, the only country they've ever known is the United States and they had no say in immigrating to the United States. Congress refused to deal with this situation so President Obama created a program through executive orders. This meant that when President Trump came to office he was able to undo a lot of this plan with another executive order.

Villavicencio's very personal look at the DACA program and the general mess of our immigration policy in The Undocumented Americans was inspired by the election of Donald Trump, but it was not what I was hoping for when I started listening to this audiobook. I was really hoping for policy analysis with a healthy bit of personal stories and interviews tossed in.

Instead, this book is very much the reverse of the book that I was looking for. It was more of an extended highly personal rant about several immigration-related topics. Many of the (somewhat fictionalized, according to the author) stories she tells have compelling features, but I found the author's style to be too personal, as though the entire screwed-up immigration system was designed just to make her miserable, like most things in life.
The author

Villavicencio is such a large part of this book that you literally cannot separate the author from the message or the stories she tells. I found her to be so annoying and almost intentionally unhappy that I was forcing myself to read the book, like it was some sort of assigned text. This was especially annoying because I really did agree with her at least 80-90% of the time.

I rate this audiobook 2 stars out of 5.

FRONT ROW at the TRUMP SHOW (audiobook) by Jonathan Karl

Published by Penguin Audio on March 31, 2020.
Read by the author, Jonathan Karl.
Duration: 10 hours, 16 minutes.
Unabridged.

Jonathan Karl has had a long relationship with Donald Trump. Karl is a reporter
Jonathan Karl and Donald Trump in 1994 and nowadays.
(The New Republic, The New York Post, CNN and ABC) and he first met Donald Trump in 1994. Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley had just gotten married and were staying in Trump Tower for their honeymoon. Karl convinced Trump to do an interview about why celebrities would want to stay in his building. Trump personally led Karl on a tour of the building.

Over the years, Karl interviewed Trump multiple times for multiple reasons. Because of this relationship, Karl was called on to interview Trump when he toyed with the idea of running for president before 2016 (5 times).

Karl moved on to be the White House correspondent for the Obama administration for ABC and stayed when Donald Trump was elected.

This book will not change a single mind about President Trump, for or against him so I am not going to even delve into his stories. I thought Karl made a series of fair points.  He was also critical of other administrations and their dealings with the press. But, he didn't go into detail on those because
it is a book about the "Trump Show".

The book is very listenable. Karl reads his own audiobook and does a great job, which is to be expected considering what he does for a living.

I rate this audiobook 5 stars out of 5. It can be found on Amazon.com here:

THE CORROSION of CONSERVATISM: WHY I LEFT the RIGHT (kindle) by Max Boot

Published in October of 2018 by Liveright.

2016 was a moment of reckoning for political writer Max Boot. Boot wrote for all of the well-known Conservative publications - The Weekly Standard, The Wall Street Journal, etc. He appeared on TV shows and radio shows and describes himself as a "movement conservative". But, the rise of Donald Trump and his subsequent election made him change his registration from Republican to Independent in protest.

Why? In his own words: "In March 2016, I had written that Trump was a 'character test' for the GOP: 'Do you believe in the open and inclusive party of Ronald Reagan? Or do you want a bigoted and extremist party in the image of Donald Trump?' To my growing horror, most Republicans were failing the test."

I picked up The Corrosion of Conservatism because I felt the same way. There is no point in laying out all of arguments against Trump - everyone has heard them. Like Boot, I was dismayed that "...most Republican leaders showed that they were willing to discard their principles as mindlessly as a Styrofoam fast-food container if by doing so they could enhance their own positions and avoid the wrath of a powerful and vindictive leader."

So, like Boot, I find myself a Republican "in exile" - I have left the party. Like the Cuban exiles, I find myself on the outside looking in and wondering what the hell happened.

Over the last two and half years Mr. Boot and I have come to a lot of the same conclusions. One of them is that President Trump has brought to life a strong nativist and racist strand that was always a part of the Conservative movement, but a part that we had always assumed was a tiny and shrinking part. Instead, he has exposed it to have been just hidden away out of politeness. Boot points out: "No, not all Trump supporters are racist. But virtually all racists, it seems, are Trump supporters."

Also: "It is hard to know who is worse: Trump or his enablers. I am inclined to think it is the latter. Trump does not know any better; he has no idea how a president, or even an ordinary, decent human being, is supposed to behave. But many of his supporters do know better, and they are debasing themselves to curry favor with him because he controls the levers of power." Boot does not go into the Evangelical support of Trump. Boot is not a Christian, so it is not his fight. But, I am so you can take that same quote and apply it to the big name Christian leaders that attach themselves to this man and make excuses for him and see how my frustration is doubled.

In the end, this book will not change any minds. But, I found it helpful to find someone as well-written as Max Boot has come to so many of the same conclusions that I have have.

I rate this book 5 stars out of 5. It can be found on Amazon.com here: THE CORROSION of CONSERVATISM: WHY I LEFT the RIGHT by Max Boot.
