Idiots Unplugged: Truth for Those Who Care to Listen (audiobook) by Glenn Beck

Image
Beck makes his points but this is a tedious collection. Published in 2010 by Simon and Schuster Audio Read by Glenn Beck and Pat Gray Duration: 1 hour, 15 minutes Idiots Unplugged is a collection of promotional sketches that were aired on Beck's nationally syndicated radio show to promote his 2010 book Arguing with Idiots: How to Stop Small Minds and Big Government . Every sketch starts and ends with the same theme song (which means you get to hear it 15 or 16 times in an hour and 15 minutes of listening! Fun? No.) Every sketch consists of Pat Gray speaking with a muppet-like voice and stating some sort of fairly common liberal argument. Beck then lays out his counter-argument, tells you where to find it in his book and then the liberal caller calls him fatso or makes some other insult about his weight. While Beck's arguments were generally sound, the easy, slow pitch softball style set up of the questions make the arguments way too pat and simple. These sketches w...

An Inconvenient Book: Real Solutions to the World's Biggest Problems by Glenn Beck

Entertaining, not terribly deep Much like a typical day on Glenn's show, An Inconvenient Book: Real Solutions to the World's Biggest Problems is fun, easy to digest, all over the place and sometimes a bit kooky. Glenn starts out with a bang with his anti-Al Gore chapter and it is strong. In the middle he gets off track with chapters like the one about chick flcks and guy movies, blind dates and the one about aging (I fail to see how wearing a toupee or not is one of the world's biggest problems). His constant cheap shots on overweight people is not endearing, either. However, his chapters on the United Nations, political correctness, college education and the minimum wage are all very strong. He ends up with his pet theory that America is being led towards a Mexican-American-Canadian united country. He discusses this from time to time on his show. He makes a weak case in his book and it is a dud of a chapter to end with. Not having footnotes, endnotes o...

Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10 (abridged audiobook) by Marcus Luttrell with Patrick Robinson

Image
Abridged Audiobook 5 CDs Approximately 6 hours. Read by Kevin T. Collins I first heard the incredible story of Marcus Luttrell  on Glenn Beck's radio show. I'm not a frequent listener of Glenn's show but this interview was so compelling I had to hear the whole thing. Lone Survivor is a much longer version of that story. It includes a long, detailed description of how Navy SEALs train and their "Hell Week" that washes out those who are not truly dedicated to being a SEAL. Luttrell also tells us about his childhood and how he aspired to be a member of a special forces unit as a young man in high school. The bulk of the book is about "Operation Redwing" - an attempt to kill or capture a Taliban leader that remains unnamed in the book (he uses a false name for this man throughout the book). The operation consists of inserting 4 SEALs in open mountain territory in Afghanistan to observe a remote village where this leader may or may not be staying. ...

America's March to Socialism: Why We're One Step Closer to Giant Missile Parades (audiobook) by Glenn Beck

Not original material, but a compilation of an ongoing segment of his radio show Published by Simon and Schuster Audio in 2009. Multicast performance (but mostly Glenn Beck). Duration: 1 hour, 6 minutes. Glenn Beck's America's March to Socialism: Why We're One Step Closer to Giant Missile Parades is a compilation of an ongoing "bit: or segment of his radio show called, "America's March to Socialism." The bit features a 1940s/50s style voice over guy telling us he's bringing us even more proof that America is heading towards socialism while a military marching plays in the background, bringing those old Soviet-style "missile parades" to mind, thus the title. There are about 20 bits on here, including an introduction. One problem is the relentless background theme music - it can be annoying, although I listened while walking the dog and it kind of helped get me in a rhythm... This is the happy Glenn - the Glenn that lampoons and q...

Glenn Beck's Common Sense: The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government, Inspired by Thomas Paine by Glenn Beck

Image
Modeled after a classic but fails in comparison (which is to be expected - it is a classic after all!) Published in 2009 by Threshold Editions Glenn Beck piggybacks on a famous pamphlet ( Common Sense by Thomas Paine) in order to inspire like minded folks to action. This book is part of his successful 9/12 project and details 9 principles and 12 values and further reading that Beck feels would put America "back on course." (p.110) Beck's book is intended to be a primer for those new to politics. For those of us who have been paying attention all along, there is little new here but it can be interesting reading just to see what Beck focuses on and how he states his positions. Glenn Beck Many of his points should be alarming to all Americans, including: a) an out of control national debt (he rips on Bush and Obama with equal venom), a tax code that seems designed to dole out favors to political supporters rather than raise revenue (especially good on pages 39-41)...
